Behind the exhibition

Sources and credits

Everything this exhibition draws on, so that anyone can check what we say.

The key sources

  • Henry's service and casualty records, transcribed and summarised for the family by The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, Salisbury, with his medal roll entry. These give the dates of his service, wounds, transfer, promotion and capture.
  • Angela Wright, Memories of Grandad. An unpublished memoir by Henry's granddaughter, written for the family. In the exhibition it is also called Grandma Angela's memoir.
  • The family's photographs, including Henry in uniform in December 1918, and photographs from the family's visit to the battlefields in August 2026.
  • Everard Wyrall, The History of the Somerset Light Infantry (Prince Albert's) 1914–1919, for the 1st Somersets on 1 July 1916.
  • The war diary of the 1st Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment, published online by The Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum, for 1916 to 1918.

Every source, and where it is used

Pictures

  • Family photographs are the Bowles family's own, and are credited “Family photograph” where they appear.
  • Imperial War Museums photographs and objects are shown under the IWM Non Commercial Licence and credited with their catalogue numbers, for example “Image: IWM (Q 754)”. They are shown uncropped and uncoloured, from the museum's own website. The full list is above, under Photographs and objects from Imperial War Museums.
  • The trench drawing in Chapter 3 is a simple diagram made for this exhibition. It is not to scale.
  • The two battle maps, of Redan Ridge on 1 July 1916 and of Frémicourt in April 1918, are period maps. Copies were given to the family by Frank, their battlefield guide, in 2026. Their original publishers are not known.

Rights and reuse

  • Family photographs, papers and Angela Wright's memoir belong to the family. Please ask before reusing them.
  • Imperial War Museums material may be reused only under the IWM's own licence terms. Please go to the IWM page linked from each picture.
  • The text written for this exhibition may be quoted for non-commercial and educational use, with credit to The Quiet Soldier.
  • Quotations from other writers and translators remain theirs, and are credited where they appear. Where a translation is not freely licensed, we give the facts in our own words and credit the translator.
  • The exhibition is free, with no adverts, and is not for profit.

If you own the rights to anything shown here and would like it credited differently, or taken down, please email hello@buildnewhabits.co.uk and we will put it right straight away.

How to cite this exhibition

Wright, G. and the Bowles family (2026). The Quiet Soldier: Lance Corporal Henry John Bowles, 1st Somerset Light Infantry and 1st Wiltshire Regiment. Family exhibition, online at https://build-new-habits.github.io/L-Cpl-Henry-John-Bowles/

For facts about Henry, please cite his records and the sources above. The imagined journal entries are a family tribute, not a historical source.

Research still to do

We are still looking for:

  • Henry's birth record, and the family in the 1901 and 1911 census.
  • The original print of Henry's portrait in uniform.
  • Where the two battle maps were first published.
  • A photograph of the Münster prisoner-of-war camps.
  • Photographs of Henry with his lorry, in his flat cap, and of the family at Weymouth.

If you can help with any of these, the family would be very grateful.
